# Octopoda plans, credits and what each scan costs

> Compare the Builder, Pro and Team plans, see how many credits each kind of scan uses, and work out which plan fits how often you scan.

Octopoda plans are monthly subscriptions that include credits. Every scan uses credits, so the plan you need depends on how often you scan. All prices are in US dollars and exclude any taxes.

The web app shows the cost before you start a scan. If a scan fails because of a problem on our side, its credits are refunded automatically.

## How credits work

* **Plan credits** arrive at the start of each billing period. Unused plan credits carry over for one more period, then expire.
* **Top-ups** add 10 credits for \$25 at any time: select **Buy top-up** on the **Billing** page. Top-up credits last 12 months.
* Scans use the credits that expire soonest first.
* Credits have no cash value and can't be transferred.

When your balance drops under 20% of your plan's monthly credits, owners and admins get an email, which you can turn off in [Notifications](https://docs.octopoda.dev/account/notifications.md). A scan that needs more credits than you have does not start until you top up or your plan renews.

> The calculator assumes you use all your credits each month, so it ignores credits carried over from the month before. Top-ups are counted in packs of 10 credits.
