# How the Octopoda free trial works

> The Octopoda free trial lasts 14 days, includes 5 credits and needs a card. Learn when you are charged, how to cancel, and the one-trial-per-person rule.

The Octopoda free trial lets you try a plan for 14 days with 5 credits, enough for one code scan or five pull request scans. A card is required to start it, and nothing is charged until the trial ends.

## Start a trial

**1. Pick a plan**

Go to [app.octopoda.dev/start](https://app.octopoda.dev/start), sign in with GitHub and choose **Builder**, **Pro** or **Team**. The page shows the price you will pay after the trial.

**2. Add a card on Stripe**

Select **Continue to checkout**. Checkout is on Stripe, which stores your card; Octopoda never sees the card number.

**3. Start scanning**

Your 5 trial credits are ready as soon as checkout is done.

## When you are charged

When the trial ends, your plan starts automatically: your card is charged the monthly price of the plan you chose, you get that plan's monthly credits, and the plan renews every month until you cancel. The **Billing** page shows how many days are left, and warns you before the trial ends.

## Cancel during the trial

On the **Billing** page, select **Invoices and card** to open the Stripe customer portal, and cancel the plan there. If you cancel before the trial ends, you are not charged. See [Manage your plan and billing](https://docs.octopoda.dev/billing/manage-billing.md).

## One trial per person

There is one free trial per person. If your GitHub account, or the card you use, has already had a trial, Octopoda cancels the new trial before anything is charged and emails you. You can then start a paid plan straight away from the same page: its credits are yours as soon as you pay.
